On March 26 (local time), Wu Lei, Chairman of Shanghai Electric Group, led a delegation to visit Ethiopia. He held meetings with senior officials from the Ethiopian Ministry of Irrigation and Lowlands and the Ethiopian Electric Power, engaging in in-depth discussions on deepening energy cooperation and promoting infrastructure connectivity.

Abraham Belay, Minister of Irrigation and Lowlands and Chairman of Ethiopian Electric Power, stated that Shanghai Electric is a trusted strategic partner of Ethiopia, and that both sides see significant potential for cooperation in energy infrastructure development. Ethiopia is rich in hydropower resources and is actively optimizing its energy structure, advancing large-scale projects to expand electricity access and boost export revenues. He expressed strong support for Shanghai Electric’s deeper participation in Ethiopia’s future power project planning, enhanced collaboration in improving energy efficiency, and coordinated development of water and energy resources, jointly contributing to Ethiopia’s energy expansion and high-quality development.

Wu Lei noted that Shanghai Electric attaches great importance to its strategic partnership with Ethiopia. The company is willing to leverage its full industrial chain advantages in high-end equipment manufacturing and EPC, align closely with Ethiopia’s national development goals, and integrate China’s advanced renewable energy technologies with Ethiopia’s market needs. Through project co-development, technology transfer, and talent cultivation, Shanghai Electric aims to create long-term value for Ethiopia’s energy security and economic prosperity.

During talks with Ashebir Balcha, CEO of Ethiopian Electric Power, Wu Lei expressed gratitude for the company’s long-standing trust and support. He emphasized that Shanghai Electric remains committed to collaborative innovation with global partners, empowering green and sustainable development by delivering efficient, safe, and reliable integrated energy solutions. Currently, Shanghai Electric’s new energy business covers the full “wind–solar–storage–hydrogen” value chain. Looking ahead, the company hopes to deepen cooperation with Ethiopian Electric Power in the local energy market, supporting Ethiopia in optimizing its energy mix and achieving sustainable economic and social development.

Ashebir highly commended Shanghai Electric’s technical strength and global track record. He pointed out that Ethiopia is at a critical stage of energy development, with a ten-year power development plan underway. He highlighted Shanghai Electric’s system integration capabilities in large-scale wind power, photovoltaics, and energy storage, expressing expectations for expanded cooperation across more sectors to help position Ethiopia as a green energy hub in East Africa.
